4. Salta : Live the life of an Argentine gaucho
Often called Salta la Linda which translates to ‘Salta the beautiful’, this handsome colonial city is surrounded by Andean peaks, red rock valleys and vineyards. It’s the place to hop onto a tour like the ‘Gaucho in Sunny Salta’ short break. You get to saddle up to gallop amid mountains and tobacco plantations, listen to folk music and tuck into a barbecue at a traditional estancia. While you don’t have to have had previous riding experience you would find this more enjoyable if you did. These trips run year-round and normally last 3 days. They are fairly low cost with a 3-day break starting at £275, however, this does not include the flights which can push up the cost a lot depending on the time of year you take the trip. The cost of flights start at around £600 so this is an expensive city break that you may want to extend to so other areas of the country.
5. Novgorod : Visit and discover Russia’s roots
Novgorod is also known as Novgorod the Great, or Novgorod Velik, with more than 1000 years of history it is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia. Here you will find and explore places like the Antoniev Monastery, the Millennium Russia monument and St Sofia’s Cathedral. The little known metropolis of Novgorod has always Russia’s oldest and unknown city but has plenty of culture to keep most people happy. This one is not so easy to get to as you need visas which can be expensive and time consuming to get. I yo go on a group tour this will be arranged for you. As St Petersburg is only 120 Km to the north it is usual to combine the two when you visit. Another option is a one-way trip starting in St P and finishing in Moscow. Typically this type of trip takes about a week with a cost of around £1500 including the flight.
6. Reims : Sip fine wines in the Champagne region
The quintessentially French city of Reims is just a short jaunt across the Channel from Britain and offers an effervescent city break. Many companies offer Champagne Weekends which explore historic Reims and on the way sample more than 25 different tipples at intimate tasting sessions. You get to visit the cellars of Taittinger, Billecart-Salmon, Vilmart and Veuve Clicquot depending on which of the tours you take. You can, of course, do this on an independent basis which will cost less and allow you to choose which places you want to go. A typical standard tour in October or November would be two night long and cost around £500 in total.
