Sonnys BBQ Pit - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Dining
Sonny’s BBQ Pit is situated on Highway 50 near the junction with Highway 27 in Clermont. This is quite a rare treat, I say tongue in cheek, as you have to be up for dining which is not quite your usual run of the mill steak houses which abound in Orlando.
Sonny’s is very, very down market as the car park will attest. It is usually full of pick-up trucks and Harley Davidsons. Once inside you will be seated either in a booth or a wooden table and wooden chairs, but do not let this put you off. The ribs are amazing and well worth the sacrifice of fine dining!
The sort of things they serve are baby back ribs which are truly the best ribs served anywhere, normal ribs and pulled pork. (Rather a strange name to us Brits) It appears to be bar-b-qued pork which is well done then shredded and served either on it’s own or in a burger bun. They have a very extensive salad bar which has soup and desserts as well, so if you buy a salad bar portion you can go back as many times as you like and get soup and a free dessert as well.
If you order any soft drink you will get a litre!
When you have ordered your meal you will be offered, sweet potato, baked potato, fries or mash, then garlic bread, coleslaw, corn on the cob or BBQ beans. When the food arrives it covers the whole table and the plates are more like platters. The garlic bread is two huge slabs of bread, the beans or coleslaw come in separate bowls and the baked potato is the size of a melon and full of butter with sour cream in a bowl on the side as well. Getting through that lot is a struggle if you are used to normal portion sizes. However you always get the obligatory take out box.
The salad bar is very varied in what it offers but the desserts are usually just two varieties of dessert puddings, tinned peaches, jelly and bread pudding. The chocolate pudding is very nice though, especially on a slab of bread pudding. I have not actually tried any of the pulled pork but it did look very succulent and juicy, so I might give it a try next time, even if just so I can say I have had pulled pork!
When we went we took home enough for the next nights meal and it all re-heats really well in the microwave. In future I think we will buy one meal and share it – the drink too!
