A ten hour delay at Birmingham airport and an overnight stop in New York because of a missed connecting flight is not an ideal way to start a two week stay in Florida, Therefore as you can imagine when we finally unpacked for our first 5 day stop in West Palm Beach in temperatures of 80 degrees we were tired but relieved.
West Palm Beach is reasonably easy to navigate; its two main areas are not only separated by the intercostals waterway but also by a cultural divide that is wider by far than geographical divide.
The heartbeat of West Palm Beach lies in the high rise downtown area around Clematis and Hibiscus. The streets provide an opportunity to see an American/Floridian way of life, with buildings that conjure up pictures of a Florida in the black and white movies. The America that came to us Brit’s via a grainy black and white TV set. On Clematis you can buy everything from greetings cards to gas bottles, have your burger served street side or just wander and soak up the atmosphere provided by the various eateriEs.
Along with its museum’s, theatres and banks this downtown area of West Palm Beach gives an authentic taste of American life.
A half mile trip across the intercostals waterway bridge Royal Palm Way you will arrive to a very different world and culture that is far removed from the one you have just left behind.
From every area of the district, Money old and new oozes out of every building.
Bentley’s, Mercedes, Jaguars are in abundance.
You cannot imagine what lies behind the sumptuous front doors of these impeccably maintained mansions, the lifestyle the owners lead and wealth that made this area so sought after.
The whole area is manicured and pristine, the yachts and launches add to the realization of the wealth that there is here.
Worth avenue is full of designers shops and the only commodity that was missing was any type of atmosphere, at times it appeared that we were the only people to inhabit the genre of this little colony. It was almost surreal.
However on reaching Ocean Blvd, miles of gleaming sea and sand makes you want to kick off your shoes and stroll along this wonderful stretch of shoreline.
West Palm Beach also boasts of walks along the coastal waterfront, museums, and a fantastic golf course “The Everglades”.
