Boca Ciega Millenium Park. - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Other Florida
Boca Ciega Millenium Park is one of Pinellas Counties wonderful parks. There are 12 in all.
This park, as the name suggests, is one of the newer parks and they have created a Time Capsule to be opened, and added to, every hundred years. Not too long to wait now until its opened again then!!
Boca Ciega is part of the Birding Trail of Florida and it is located in Seminole. The park has 182 acres of natural loveliness. This park has one of my favourite extras and that is an observation tower. This is a 35 foot wooden construction and as you may guess, gives you unrivalled views over Boca Ciega Bay. There are great and extensive boardwalks here which allow you to skirt the waters edge in comfort. There is also a trail through the wooded area.
The playground is great for the younger ones and also of benefit to the grown ups who can grab a half hours peace. There are restroom facilities and also a very nice thoughtful touch of water fountains. We always like to pack a picnic and there are picnic tables provided. If you are feeling lazy, just pop in a store and buy some ready made finger food.
You are allowed to fish off the pier; do not forget that you
need a licence. These are available from larger Walmart stores, the ones that have a sports section. Fishing seems to be good pretty much everywhere in Florida. Kayaking and canoeing are also allowed, you will need to rent your canoe from a concession; Tackle Shack Water Sports or Canoe County Outfitters.
There is a fun dog park here which seemed pretty popular the day of our visit and it was entertaining to see our four legged friends attempt the dog agility course. Looks like it is a daily social event for the owners as well.
So what about wildlife? Among the birds that call this park home are wood stork; egret; blue heron and anhinga.
There are upwards of a couple of dozen different snakes here as well. We were told, not very re-assuringly, that only 4 of these are venomous!! However, we have to remember that your chances of seeing any snake are slim and they do a great job of keeping down the pests.
Boca Ciega Millenium Park is situated on 74th avenue north.
