Whats new in cruise ships? Part 1 - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Miscellaneous
For those of us who are lucky enough to be able to combine a trip to the excitement of Orlando with a Caribbean cruise, there is good news about the cruise industry. The building boom is continuing, and between 2010 and 2014, numerous large cruise liners will be launched, so there will be even more beautiful ships to choose from.
Each of these amazing ships cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build, many contain examples of fine art and sculpture, and all of the following are large, ocean-going cruise liners that sail mainly out of America, though some will cruise the Mediterranean, or the Middle East (Dubai). The following information is, of course, subject to change, as delivery dates may move as the ship is constructed.
In 2009, more cruise ships were launched than in 2008, and in 2010 over 12 new ships will be launched, including the Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest liner. This ship carries an estimated 5. 400 guests and 1650 crew and is 222, 000 gross tons. In order to maintain the ship’s stability, the designers created a wide hull. In fact just 30 ft (9m) of the ship is below the water, so the combination of wide hull and shallow draft might have made her unstable. However, during trials trials she was found to be stable, due to her enormous size, despite experiencing winds of almost hurricane force and seas of in excess of 40 ft (12m) on her maiden transatlantic crossing. Having seen her docked in St Maarten, she is certainly a spectacular sight, although we were surprised that she is a very pale blue as opposed to the sparkling white normally associated with RCI ships.
In December 2010, Allure of the Seas will join her sister ship, Oasis of the Seas, as one of the Caribbean’s biggest new ships, making Eastern and Western cruises alternately from Fort Lauderdale. Featuring two-level loft suites, and Aqua Theater family Suites, this amazing ship boasts a Presidential Suite which will sleep 14. It also features the Diamond Lounge, available to all repeat guests who have achieved Diamond status, as a result of completing 10 cruises with RCI. Amongst other perks, this lounge will feature complimentary evening cocktails.
Costa are the leaders in new cruise liners, with three ships due between 2010 and 2012. The 92, 700 ton Costa Deliziosa was launched in 2010, whilst the Costa Favolosa is due in Summer 2011, with Costa Fascinosa following in Spring, 2012. Deliziosa features a 4-D cinema and their signature Samsara Spa, and it will sail from Dubai on 7 night cruises.
However, there are many exciting and innovative ships due from Princess, Holland America and, of course, Disney!
