Legends Golf and Country Club
Whilst spending time at our villa on Highlands Reserve, my son in law and I took the opportunity for a bit of relaxation with a round at Legends Golf Course. Located on the US27, North of Highlands Reserve, it took us around 25 minutes in travel time. This is a semi-private/public course and to play on a Tuesday at 8-00am cost $19-50 – a very good rate. The Pro-shop was nicely put together with ample supplies to get your round under way. There is also a practice range and Bar and Grill which serves food from 11am to 2pm. The golf cart attendant was very informative but we had to put our own clubs onto the cart. The drive to the first tee was quite a distance but the sign posts were clear.
The 18 hole course is designed by Lloyd Clifton and stretches 6911 yards from the gold tees; Legends is a par 72 with a slope rating of 131 and course rating of 7.
The first hole was downhill and quite short which was nice to open with. Unfortunately as we went to the second tee there was a hold up for two 4 balls and so we agreed to join two other golfers to make our own 4 ball and therefore we didn’t have to wait on any shots. It was nice to meet some other players from out of the area and share experiences of this and other courses.
At the time of our visit, it was disappointing to find the course was rather wet and boggy (though that could have had something to do with the huge downpour we had just missed! ) Also the tee boxes and fairways had very large clumps of wild grass all over them. The greens didn’t fare much better as they were rather pitted and had brown stains on them. I wondered if the course was in a transition period. This is very unusual considering how immaculate the majority of the other courses are in the area and a shame considering the relatively low cost to play there.
It would however make an excellent course to play with my young son who is a novice player and may have been a little intimidated with some of the other courses and was in stark contrast to the next course we played, the National course at Championsgate which is down the US27 about 20 minutes off Ronald Reagan Boulevard. Here the greens were immaculately kept, though of course they should have been at a cost of almost three times as much for a round!
Still it was a very enjoyable morning even though I did lose to my son in law and I’m sure they’ll get the course sorted in time for a re-match next year!
