Johns Pass - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Days Out

Johns pass lies on the Gulf of Mexico South of Tampa on a strip of Land right on the Oceanfront West of St Petersburg.

This quaint turn-of-the-century fishing village hosts a wonderful beach and a waterfront boardwalk of 1100ft along the picturesque inland waterway.

The village has a variety of shops and restaurants that will keep you occupied for hours. They are not the usual “junk” gift shops either (although you can find the odd one). I am not really a shopper but I found our time roaming around the outlets very interesting.

After a meal or just a cooling drink on the boardwalk you can then try out one of the many water activities right from the deck. These include a local fishing fleet, cruise lines, boat rentals, parasailing and jet skiing. Wilson Hubbard built the boardwalk in 1980 over the fishing marina and restaurant although the village itself was around at the turn of the centaury.

The best way I can describe the geography of this charming fishing village is in a triangular shape, with the boardwalk making the bottom of the triangle. The West (left) line would be the beach/Hotels etc. and the East (right) the shopping area. Right in the middle of the “triangle” there is plenty of parking available. There is a charge for the parking at around $1 per hour.

On our last trip a few of us fancied a short fishing trip after lunch in one of the many eateries on the boardwalk. On arrival at the marina there were no charters docked and we thought we were going to have to miss out. We had a chat we the guy who seemed to be in charge and within 15 minutes (just enough time to get a couple of cold drinks for our trip) we had our own private 36ft fishing boat. We fished just a few hundred yards from the beach over an old pier that had collapsed during a hurricane. We all caught several Grouper that gave a great fight as they tried to get back to the cover they had emerged from to take our bait.

Our favored Gulf Coast destination was always Clearwater but Johns Pass has now become our No. 1 destination, as everything is close by and within walking distance.

This place is always on out “to do” list whenever we visit Florida and we thank a regular guest of ours for recommending it to us.
