The Best Beach in Florida - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Other Florida
I wonder if you know which beach in Florida has been voted the number one beach?
Well, I can tell you! It is Fort De Soto North Beach which actually is made up of Mullet (the fort site); St Jean; St Christopher; Madelaine and Bonne Fortune Keys
Fort De Soto is stunningly beautiful with seven miles of sparkling water front which includes 3 miles of powder white sand. There are 15 picnic shelters to give you welcome shade and a ferry service to Egmont Key. If you like a stroll, then there is a self guided barrier free nature trail and we spotted at least two other nature trails. So nice to get among the trees for a while!
It is hard to believe now but this area was used in World War Two as a bombing and gun range. However, after the War, the Government sold it back to the county for $26, 000.
If you visit The Quartermasters Museum you will learn about this period of history. This museum has won an award from The Florida Trust. Admission is
free.
Of course, before all that, this area was occupied by the Native American known as the Tocobaga. They had left before the Spanish arrived in the early 16th century.
I am sure, that for most of you, the beach will be your main aim and you will not be disappointed. Whether swimming, sun bathing or merely chilling out, this beach is tops!!! Clearwater beach is great, but does get crowded so this beach is a welcome change. During april to September, this beach has Logger Head Turtles which are a joy to observe and no fewer than 328 different species of birds have been spotted, so take your binoculars with you.
I cannot think of a beach that has so many diverse things to do in such a beautiful setting. Parking costs $5 for an all day stay and you will want to stay for the duration. On our last visit, the sky was overcast , but we still had a great day.
Sadly, during the summer months, it is best to take mosquito repellent. Also a hat, sunscreen and
water. Oh, and of course, your camera/smartphone to capture the memories of you day on the number one beach!
There is a concession here but since they provide picnic tables, why not take your own?
