What to see in and around Pinellas County.
Clearwater: Visitors will soon understand Clearwater’s nickname - The Sparkling City. The waters from the Gulf sparkle in the daily sunshine, and water sports are around in abundance. It is a growing city community and a coastal community which stretches for 3km and has a huge expanse of beautiful white sand on the spotless clean beaches. Clearwater Beach is one of the most popular beaches and is probably the most fashionable community. The beaches offer comfortable sun loungers and sun umbrellas so one can feel protected from the scorching sunshine. The crystal clear water is extremely warm during the summer months and is is difficult to find a cool spot anywhere! There is a Beach Cafe to grab your lunch from and take it back to your loungers. However, beware of the seagulls as they literally will dive bomb and steal the food out of your hand. You will also find Public Conveniences on the beach, and a gift shop where you can purchase your sun lotions, buckets and spades, lilo’s, blow up boats, kites, beach sandals and shoes, sun hats and all other items connected with visits to the beach. There are plenty of lifeguards with facilities along the beach and it is important to pay attention to them. They also offer a first aid service for the minor accidents that can happen on any visit to the beach.
One can fish straight off Pier 60 which stretches out into the Gulf, rent a boat from the huge marina, take a cruise, or even just walk around the marina and watch the fishermen come in and the fascinating pelicans flying in to try to get some fishy tit-bits for their lunch! There are several different types of cruise including picnic cruises on a huge pirate ship, another one that offers on board dinner dances, and of course the Sea Screamer which flashes past the beach at really high speeds. Events include the Kahlua Cup International Races that take place in November.
The Ruth Eckerd Hall on McMullen Booth Road is part of the performing arts complex, and often presents music, and art exhibitions which are held in its gallery. The Florida Orchestra is based here and the Florida Opera gives performances during the year.
There are many restaurants dotted along the seafront plus some great hotels including the Clearwater Beach Hotel which is reminiscent of the old times and a great place to have dinner and watch the fabulous sunsets so often to be found on the Gulf Coast. The bar occasionally has music playing so you can go and sit in there and relax after having a rather splendid dinner in wonderful surroundings.
Of course there is a McDonalds. What city would be complete without one! There are also a few boutiques, souvenir shops, ice cream parlours so if you want to take a break from the beach you can just go for a stroll and cool down with a superb home made ice-cream.
A good day out can always be had at Clearwater Beach. Enjoy! !
