Wall Springs Park - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Other Florida

Florida is home to many great parks and I would like to tell you of one of our favourites.
Wall Springs Park is in Palm Harbour and was once a spa for the early tourists. It is named after its original owner, Charles F Wall. Pinellas County acquired sixty three acres in 1988 and have since added parcels of land that add up to two thousand and ten acres.
The source of the spring is the Upper Florida Acquifer and at its best, it carries 7405 gallons of water a minute. On a hot day, this spring looks oh, so tempting but is is not one of those springs you can take a refreshing swim in.
However, the beach is not far away so factor in a trip to the ocean at the end of your day if you want a splash in water. May I suggest the nearby Live Oaks Neighborhood Park at 600 Crystal Beach.

The centre piece of the park is a 35 foot observation tower that gives you an unrivalled view of The Gulf. The climb to the top is not too daunting and is certainly well worth it.
There is also a Boardwalk for easy walking and nature trails. You may also fish although you will need a licence which are available from any Walmart store that has a sports section. In the unlikely event that you have bikes with you, there are also bike trails
You have a good chance of spotting some wildlife and this could include racoon, egrets, cranes and reptiles.

If you have young children there is a good playground for the little ones to work off their energy while parents have a break watching them!
It is a good idea to pack a picnic to take advantage of the shady areas provided. If you are more ambitious, you could take a BBQ with you, grills are provided.

There is no charge to use this park and trails and there is an information point and good loos. Parking is also free of charge.

As a general tip -when you go to all these natural areas, it is a good idea to take a hat, sunscreen, bug repellent and plenty of water.

There are no fewer that 12 public parks from Tarpon Springs to St Petes and all of them offer something a little bit different. It is my aim to explore them all.
