Our Stay at Treasure Island Part 2 - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Places to Visit
The Thunderbird motel is ideal for families although when they holiday on their own in the quieter months my parents still stay here.
All the rooms have 2 Queen Beds which is ideal for young families with children. You can either stay on the ground floor which surrounds the beautifully landscaped courtyard and pool or on the first floor which has great views out to sea. At the front and directly by the beach are some lovely rooms although theses are more expensive. They also have 2 Queen Beds but in addition have balconies. My parents tend to book one of these in the cooler winter months because if the weather is not so good they can still sit out on their balconies and read books. In addition to the basic rooms there are also “efficiencies” which have their own small kitchen. As Treasure Island is relaxing sand and sun place it is great for those who just want to stay on the beach and eat in their room, you can stroll across the road for a take away Pizza or phone for a Chinese meal to be delivered. All the rooms have two chairs and a table outside so after you meal you can just sit and people watch, all rooms have good views of the pool, beach and sea.
The motel has wifi for those who need internet access and the Foyer is really well stocked with hundreds of leaflets of local events.
Although meals are served in their small indoor restaurant or outdoor in the courtyard the most popular of these tends to be breakfast with guests either dining in their rooms or going out for a meal nearby in the evening.
Situated by the pool just before you go onto the beach is the Tiki bar which is open every day from 12 noon until half an hour after the sun goes down. This is a great favourite with locals who love to watch the sport on TV as they enjoy a drink. Guests at the Thunderbird seem to come from far and wide although predominantly from America and the Tiki Bar area with tables and umbrellas gets very busy from about 4. 00pm particularly at weekends. There is a Happy Hour for some cocktails and certain beers between 2. 00pm and 4. 00pm every day. Non alcoholic cocktails are also served and children feel quite grown up when they have one of these! Live music is provided everyday until sunset. On our most recent visit there was a family whose children dressed as morphs. They kept guests at the motel and on the adjoining walkway laughing for quite some time as they posed for photos or jogged behind unsuspecting joggers to the amusement of the entire crowd.
