New section at Museum of Discovery and Science. - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Other Activities
The Discovery Center at The Museum of Discovery and Science is a new feature at this marvellous museum. The museum is located in South West Street in Fort Lauderdale.
If we start on the first floor you will come across Otters at Play. These cute little creatures are very entertaining and are native to North America. You may be surprised to hear the variety of noises that they make; these vary from whistles to chirps to an almost chuckle.
The Everglades Airboat Adventure is also on the first floor and this is a simulated air boat ride (without, as they tell you, the bugs! ) This ride will take you through The Everglades with all its flora and fauna, twisting and turning as it goes. The Everglades has one of the most interesting eco systems in the World.
The Storm Center projects hurricanes onto a projection globe. You can also actually touch the vortex of a tornado that is 10 feet high. Then try to build a house before a hurricane hits. You will be racing other people in this task.
Prehistoric Florida comes alive in this showcase. You can come face to face with an Imperial Mammoth and sabre tooth tiger and actually enter through the mouth of a 50 foot megalodon. You will be travelling back 60 million years at this exhibit. This is the last section that I have tell you about that is sited on the first floor.
So now we will go up to the second floor and see what delights await us there.
Here is sited The Mangurian Foundation Lifelong Learning Center. This is where there is an educational center with 4 fully operational labs.
The Florida Water Story is also up here and this is an interactive display that shows how aquifers work and what water is made of and is capable of. Aquifers are a wet, underground layer of water bearing permeable rock (I confess I did not this before)
The final section of the upper floor is The Keller Science Theater. It is here that you will see live demonstarations and lectues and even a live animal show.
Well that is only one part of this fascinating museum so you can clearly see that it is well worth the rather long drive.
