Early December at Treasure Island - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Days Out
Any month is a good month to go to Florida but one of our favourite times of year has to be early December. If there is ever a month to get a bargain in air fares it is likely to be at that time as long as you return home before Christmas.
The weather is usually still very good with average daytime temperatures in the mid-70s.
At this time of year all the Christmas decorations are up Christmas music is playing everywhere and it is a great time to do your Christmas shopping, we always seem to get a long list from the girls at if they do not come with us!
We usually spend a few days at Treasure Island at this time of year staying at a motel directly on the wide sandy beach the Thunderbird Motel.
When we first went in December we initially found it strange such a Christmassy feel and warm very sunny days.
All the restaurants have Christmas decorations but our favourite has to be at Foxy’s where the Grinch greets you as you enter the restaurant. The whole area whether private houses or restaurants seems to be awash with displays of poinsettias.
There is an outdoor Market every Friday morning in Treasure Island and at Christmas it bellows out Christmas music has a big Christmas tree and even some of the visiting dogs are dressed up in their Christmas clothes!
On the beach front at weekends there is man with his dog who wears a pirate’s hat (that is the dog not the man! ) that goes round pulling a small trailer laden with Christmas decorations for sale.
Most weekends in December there are lighted boat parades in different areas of this region of the gulf coast. Look out for details in the local papers and they will give you the dates, specific times and the best vantage places to watch the parade. Similarly if you watch the local news on the TV this usually gives out the dates and times.
Last time we were at Treasure Island we went to the local lighted boat parade and watched it from the Causeway Bridge which was closed to traffic whilst the parade took place. It really was fantastic with boats of all shapes and sizes brilliantly illuminated with many different themes. The people of the boats dressed in Christmassy costumes were either singing, ringing bells or just shouting out Christmas greetings to the watching crowds.
It really was quite magical and we ended our evening at the nearby R Bar and enjoyed even more live Christmas music whilst we ate.
If you do get chance to visit this area in early December you will really enjoy it.
