Chevrolet Equinox - standard SUV - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Travelling
On a very short recent visit to Florida I chose to use Alamo to supply my rental car for our 1 week stay. On this trip I chose a Chevrolet Equinox AWD standard SUV from the parking Lot. With my wife and two teenage daughters luggage capacity is one of necessities that has to sit right at the top of my list, especially for the journey to and from the airport. Whilst this vehicle looks compact on the outside it does not disappoint in this area and is capable of easily taking the large suitcases and hand luggage that we had travelled with.
Over the last few years I have been lucky enough to be able to try many different models and makes of car. The Equinox was a very comfortable vehicle for a family of 4 ‘adults’ and easy to manoeuvre with its elevated driving position and road hugging All Wheel Drive system (there are also front wheel drive units in existence). Coupled with the use of a portable satellite navigation unit (which can be hired via this web site), we found it the perfect car for getting around locally and for those slightly longer journeys to places like the Kennedy Space Center. Our model of vehicle was the the LT AWD 4 door (5 if you include the tailgate) fitted with the 2. 4 Litre DOHC engine. This delivers a respectable 182 BHP from 4 cylinders and proved much more economical than many SUVs in this size bracket. From the six speed automatic gearbox we were easily achieving 23mpg, which is good by US standards. The vehicle came with an eight way power driver seat, auto dimming rear view mirror, automatic climate controlled air conditioning, a Pioneer eight speaker sound system and cruise control.
Driving the vehicle was very pleasurable indeed and both my wife and myself could easily find comfortable seating positions with a good view of the road and easy access to all controls. The transmission provided very smooth transitions from gear to gear. Coupled with its traction control system this allowed the vehicle to feel very confident on the road indeed. Although not as silky smooth when accelerating as a comparable V6 SUV, once at the desired speed it was difficult to really tell the difference when cruising, with the added advantage of using less fuel and therefore fewer visits to the fuel station.
The car is good looking from the outside and I would certainly rent another one.
