For those of you that like to take a walk on the wild side why not visit the Cherry Pocket located by the side of the beautiful Lake Pierce in Lake Wales approximately a 30 mile/40 minute drive from the Davenport/Kissimmee area.
The Cherry Pocket originally opened around the 1940’s as a place for fishermen to meet up, have a beer and talk about the “Big fish” they caught on Lake Pierce early in that day. In the beginning all the Cherry Pocket Tavern was, was one small room which sold a few groceries, bait and fishing tackle but over the years it has been extended to the Tavern you see now.
Take in the atmosphere either indoors with the rustic surroundings or the fun outdoor terrace with its own bar and view of Lake Pierce (if you are lucky you might just spot a gator).
They have a wide choice of food ranging from fresh seafood, such as Grooper Nuggets, Fried oysters, a huge seafood boat and for the more adventurous the “Gator nuggets”. For those that cant make up their mind they also do cracker platters for 2 or more which include catfish, fish and gator nuggets, mushrooms, onion rings, squash, zucchini with choice of dressing.
For the oyster lovers out there visit the raw bar where you can buy raw or steamed oysters in either one dozen or bucket full portions.
Don’t fill up too much though as on offer for the main course comes crab diners, peel and eat shrimps, steaks, pork chops, burgers, more fish and yes you have guessed it more gator! ! For pasta lovers try the Cherry Pocket famous Fettuccini’s serviced with seafood or chicken. They also provide a children’s menu.

For visitors wanting to make the most of the festival atmosphere and join in with a few beers and I am sure a few stories about “the ones that got away” , the Cherry Pocket offers cabins and RV Spaces for rent. The cabins offer two rooms a living/dining room and a bedroom with a queen bed and a closet bath.
Before visiting the Cherry Pocket why not work up an appetite by visiting nearby Historic Lake Wales. Bok Tower and Gardens http://boktowergardens. org/ with its 205ft neo-gothic “singing” tower which hosts concerts from the 60 bell carillon twice daily. Take a leisurely walk down the Pine Ridge trail or for the more active try the 1. 5 mile preserve trail. Tickets for Bok Tower are around $18.
For free things to do in Lake Wales, try the Grove House located on I27 north of the intersection with the I60. Here you can try out the local juices and learn all about the citrus growers in Florida, there is a comfy theatre that shows 14 minute films of how to make the best juice in the world! !
Other free attractions include the Lake Wales Art Centre (although donations are welcome) or have a scenic walk down old historic downtown area, take the kids to Spook Hill, where legend has it Chief Cuffcowelax was buried, park on the hill, put the car in neutral and the chief will pull your car backwards (as featured in the NY times and the Travel Channel).
Finally (and again free to look round and even free soup cannery tour) visit Chalet Suzanne and sample the Chalet Suzanne soup (not free! ! ), rumour it that this soup was even requested by the astronauts visiting the moon.
