Avist to Fort Myers - Orlando / Florida Guide
Florida Guide > Other Florida
Fort Myers is an old Floridian town that dates back to the 1880s. Its better knows n as “the city of palms” and has plenty of sightseeing attractions in and around the town. One place we visited was called the Edison Winter Home and the Ford Winter Home. These homes were built by the famous Henry Ford. Some of the things you’re likely to see inside the homes on the tour are a Laboratory with the great man’s inventions from a phonograph to miners’ lamps. These have some beautiful gardens which consist of lots of exotic and rare plants that were collected by Edison.
Another attraction we visited was the entertaining Imaginarium Hands on Museum and Aquarium with its impressive store of Interactive games and gadgets, saltwater and freshwater Aquariums. There is also a cinema presenting 3-D film shows. The Causa Nature Centre and Planetarium is very interesting, this is you can get up close and personnel with Snakes, Alligators and other reptiles. They have regular presentations including bugs, Lizards and touch exhibits. We then took a short drive to Manatee Park which is a non-captive haven for manatees. If you visit in winter time and go to the observation deck you can get a prime view of West Indian Manatees basking in the warm run-off waters from a nearby power plant.
Another place I visited was the Babcock Wilderness Adventures which is a bumpy swamp buggy ride around the huge Crescent B Ranch, the tour guides are very knowledgeable and are trained Naturalists. This place has Bison Quarter horses and Senepol Cattle, the ranch is also inhabited by Wild Alligators, hogs, deer and turkeys. You can also venture into the Telegraph Swamp where there is a boardwalk trail that leads to a Panther Enclosure.
Fort Myers has some wonderful Beaches with white sand and the warm waters of the gulf. You can go Sea fishing or take a boat trip to see the Dolphins; we found that the Dolphin sightseeing tour was brilliant. They take you about 4 miles out and you get the dolphins swimming behind the boat as you get to high speed.
You will also find some great restaurants in Fort Myers Beach, if you like seafood then there are a number of fish restaurants that have speciality dishes. There is also a nice Italian and Mexican restaurant, the Italian one caters for vegetarians which came in very handy for one of our party.
I can fully recommend Fort Myers as a destination to visit when you’re on the Florida gulf coast.
