Electra Metropolis roof garden; this sources regional ingredients and prepares traditional dishes with a light imaginative touch. A typical meal would be tuna tartare, lamb with anthotyro, grouper with sun-dried Santorini tomatoes and round it all off with ekmek which is a custard and whipped cream pastry with syrup.
Grande Bretagne roof garden is a popular rooftop restaurant and bar with an unrivalled view of the Acropolis. Well sourced ingredients prepare deceptively simple dishes such as carre and leg duet of lamb with artichoke cream, black garlic and herb stuffed pitta, kakavia fish soup with ravioli and grilled scallops with cauliflower, raisins and almonds.
I Kriti, this is small tavern hidden in one of Athens many arcades. No printed menu, dishes depends on what’s good in the market. They may include honey marinated lambs, liver, rabbit, fennel pies, wild greens or tiny fried fish. Leave room for the spoon sweets that come with the bill.
I Stani, is now in its fourth generation, at this milk shop you can eat in or buy to enjoy later, thick creamy yoghurt, rice puddings, galatombureko, loucoumades and anthogalo with honey are some of the traditional Greek sweet desserts offered at this lovely shop/café.
Mokka café, this is close to the entrance of the Central market. The owner makes the coffee the traditional way in briki over hot sand and serves it in tiny cups along with a Turkish delight.
Souvlaki o Kostas, is the grandson of another legendary cook, here you can find wonders in his small busy shop. The souvlaki comes with yoghurt, parsley and onion wrapped in a thick traditional pitta.
Spondi is a Michelin starred restaurant, set in an elegant house and tranquil garden. Dishes include smoked eel with beetroot, yoghurt and dill, sea bass with celery mousseline, milk-fed lamb with pea and lemon and patisserie. It has an exceptional wine list.
To Laini, serves Cretan country food with flair in this small café. Try the Sfakia pie, snails with rosemary, wild artichokes in olive oil, and rabbit with pasta.
Varoulko, is a waterfront Michelin star restaurant, that prepares fish mezes of grilled octopus, squid, cuttlefish, marinated anchovies. This is the place to go for the seafood lover.
Verzane is a Greek bistro, near to the National Gallery which uses a traditional wood-fired oven for its modern take on regional dishes. The octopus is drizzled in olive oil and spiced lemon with black garlic, or try the goat neck with wild greens. This is a late-night hotspot and the last food orders are taken in the early hours in the morning.
